Established in 1919 by Grandad Gayton, the family business has continued in the Gayton family as is now run by the brother and sister team, David Gayton & Elizabeth Charlton.
David Gayton, is the Master Baker, and was one of the youngest bakers in the UK to be awarded such an honour at the age 10. He used to sneak out of the window at 2.00am in the morning to watch his dad, Walter Gayton, making the bread! David’s bread making skills are relished by the good old honest local British public.
Elizabeth Charlton, learnt her skills from her two Aunties - Doreen & Mirrie. With Aunty Doreen teaching her cake making skills & Aunty Miry how to decorate celebration cakes. She now makes the most lovely sponge & fruit cakes. With her Christmas range of Christmas cakes & mince pies selling out at every market.
Mother Gayton, Glynis, who is officially retired keeps busy presenting her life story in her talk ‘Our Daily Bread’. Which gives an enlightening insight into the daily trials and tribulations of bread & cake production. Her services are in demand as she is booked up 2 years ahead! She also still helps out when needed and is a much needed help to look after her 6 grandchildren!
The memories of Grandad Gayton live on through his recently published diary ‘Goodbye to 1940’. His diary is daily account of a baker’s life during the war. They are sold for £3.00 each with all proceeds going to ‘the Poppy Appeal’.
Jo & Margaret are part of the family and have been with us for years. Jo answers the phones & is exceptional cake maker. While Margaret looks after you on your visit to the bake house and ensures you get your bread & cakes with a smile.
